Up in the northern Medoc, a distance from Bordeaux, the soils lean more towards clay than gravel, which suits Merlot a bit better than Cabernet Sauvignon. That said, the mixed terrain means you'll often find a good balance of both, as you do here in Tessonniere's flagship wine. This particular blend, roughly equal parts of both, is aged for 18 months in vats after fermentation. It's brimming with ripe blackcurrant and raspberry flavours, with a subtle hint of spice. On the palate, it's lively and well-balanced, with fine tannins and a rounded finish that's hard to resist. Balanced and engaging claret.

Perfect with something hearty like Gascon pork confit or a bit of black pudding - basically, anything rich enough to stand up to its dark fruit and firm tannins - or if you're feeling like it, a wedge of nutty Comte does the trick.
